Jun 5, 2014 Share

(ST. JOSEPH) – Stevensville resident and Lakeshore High School honors graduate Heidi Dragiewicz recently received the Lighthouse Scholarship for $1,000. The annual scholarship recognizes local youths who are in financial need and have experienced the death of a parent. Qualifying recipients are graduating high school seniors pursuing a college education.

“This scholarship means that I am being blessed once again by Lory's Place to help my future and I hope to help others in the way that they have helped me,” said Heidi. “I plan to continue to be involved with Lory's Place because I want to be there for kids in the way that I needed when I was grieving.”

Heidi plans to attend Lake Michigan College this fall. In addition to volunteering as a Teen Facilitator at Lory’s Place, Heidi participated in soccer, track, dance, poms, and DECA at Lakeshore.

The Richard Beckrow Memorial Scholarship was established in 2005 by Dr. Jason and Mrs. Kathryn Beckrow in memory of Jason’s father, Richard Beckrow, who died at the age of 41 as the result of an automobile accident. Last year, the scholarship was renamed as the Lighthouse Scholarship to honor the life and memory of Matt Mannino, a dear friend of Dr. Jason and Kate Beckrow, who died in 2012. Matt was diagnosed with a rare malignancy of the thymus gland in 2004 and bravely battled cancer for seven years.

About Lory’s Place
Statistics have shown that one out of eight children will experience the death of a parent before the age of 18. Many times, these children have no outlet for their grief, and do not know how to express their feelings. Lory's Place was created to help children and their families work through their grief so they can become capable, healthy, and optimistic about the future.

Since opening 10 years ago, thousands of children from Allegan, Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties in Michigan, as well as from northern Indiana, have taken the courageous step of accessing the bereavement resource services of Lory’s Place. With professional bereavement staff and trained volunteers, Lory’s Place provides regularly scheduled age-appropriate support group sessions that allow children and adults to interact with peers who have suffered similar loss. There is no charge for the services that Lory’s Place provides.
