Tammy Gregory, 52, a Lawrence resident, was experiencing the slow deterioration of her knee. It had begun to affect the way she walked, shifting her posture and ultimately causing issues in her back. Additionally, her pain was reaching the point where daily tasks, even sleep, were becoming a strain.
Seeking help, she contacted
Jeffrey Postma, DO, – an orthopedic physician who had helped her in the past – and was delighted to learn that his skill set included knee replacement surgery. Tammy met with Dr. Postma and discussed the necessary procedure. She said the one thing that truly made this experience memorable was the amount of effort Dr. Postma and many other healthcare providers at
Lakeland Hospital, Watervliet gave to ensure that she was prepared for her surgery and recovery.
Dr. Postma explained everything that Tammy should expect during surgery and the work that would be required afterwards for her to return to full health. A day before she was admitted to the hospital, Tammy participated in "Knee Camp," a group setting where she was educated further on her condition and what she could expect after the procedure. A physical therapist and occupational therapist even visited Tammy’s home before the surgery to answer any questions and ensure that she would be able to maneuver safely, as she lives alone.
Upon being admitted to the hospital in February 2014, Tammy said she was well prepared for her surgery. "I felt great, everything was planned out ahead of time for me," she said.
Before the surgery, Dr. Postma explained the procedure again and was able to minimize any possible anxiety Tammy might have had. While in the hospital, Tammy was cared for by "fantastic nurses," who were available to her at all times.
After the surgery, Tammy said it was, "Amazing how quickly the procedure got [her] up and going again." She was only in the hospital for four days before being discharged, without needing crutches or a walker. She was elated to be able to perform physical therapy so readily, saying "I’ve never had a surgery so thorough."
One thing that truly concerned Tammy was going back home. As a sole resident, she could not rely on anyone to check in on her or make sure her house was maneuverable. However, the surgery allowed for such a quick recovery that she was mobile enough for this not to be a concern at all.
Tammy is now back to full health and is extremely pleased with her decision to have knee surgery, as well as choosing Dr. Postma in Watervliet. She is once again able to sleep through the night without any pain. Her only regret is that she waited so long to have the surgery done and she encourages others not to do the same.
"There is nothing to be afraid of," said Tammy. "A healthy knee is within grasp!"
