Family Medicine Residency Curriculum PGY-1

The first year provides residents with well-rounded experiences in traditional internship rotations. Residents will develop their core medical knowledge in order to learn the necessary skills to provide hospital care. During this year the resident will hold one (1) half-day of continuity clinic. All first year residents are expected to pass BLS, ACLS, ALSO, NRP and PALS. These courses will be provided by Lakeland Health.

Inpatient Medicine (2 blocks)

Medicine is completed at Lakeland Hospital, Niles. Generally, there is one senior level resident on a block who acts as med chief providing support to the junior residents. While on this block the resident team is expected to respond to all codes.

Night Float (1 block)

Night Float is completed at Lakeland Medical Center, Saint Joseph. During this rotation we team up with the other internal medicine and emergency medicine residents to provide admissions service and night coverage to the hospital. While on this block the resident team is expected to respond to all codes.

Emergency Medicine (1 block)

Emergency medicine is an integrated experience, which occurs at both our facility, Lakeland Hospital, Niles, and Lakeland Medical Center, Saint Joseph. The residents work alongside attendings to provide care for patients with a wide variety of disease processes.

Obstetrics (1 block)

Obstetrics is a combined experience of Labor & Delivery in the hospital and clinic based prenatal and postpartum care. During this rotation residents gain experience with perinatal care, delivery process, and procedures associated with it.

Gynecology (1 block)

Gynecology is completed in the same clinic where our obstetrics are done. During this rotation, residents increase their knowledge of women’s health along with guidelines and protocols common to the primary care setting. Knowledge of many women’s health procedures is gained through this rotation.

Inpatient Pediatrics (1 block)

Our inpatient pediatrics service is held at Lakeland Medical Center, Saint Joseph. During this rotation you will gain knowledge regarding both common and uncommon problems afflicting pediatric patients. We have specialists rotate through from Bronson Health who provide advanced care close to home.

Outpatient Pediatrics-Niles (1 block)

This rotation is completed through our Niles Rural Health Clinic. Outpatient pediatrics allows for experience performing well child exams school physicals as well as management of childhood illnesses. During this rotation you will have experience attending and caring for the patients in the nursery at Lakeland Hospital, Niles.

General Surgery (1 block)

General Surgery is completed through our Niles hospital location. During this rotation you experience both the outpatient and inpatient side of surgical services. OR time is plentiful and the experiences are diverse. No surgical call is required for this rotation.

Orthopedic Surgery (1 block)

This rotation is completed through our partner orthopedics clinic in Saint Joseph. During this rotation you will learn about arthrocentesis, joint injections, as well as casting and splinting.

Cardiology (1 block)

This rotation is completed through the Cardiology clinic in Niles. You will gain experience in many different cardiac conditions and procedures. A well rounded base of both outpatient and inpatient experiences make this rotation a wonderful learning experience.

Health Systems Management (1/2 block)

Our Health Systems Management experience is a well-rounded experience that allows our residents to learn about the practicalities of running a clinic and hospital administration.

Electives (1 ½ blocks)
