Professional Longitudinal Tracks
Spectrum Health Lakeland’s EM Program has instituted professional longitudinal tracks to offer residents more in-depth exposure to an EM subspecialty area. These tracks allow our graduates to be positioned as outstanding fellowship candidates or to rapidly move into niche positions as attending physicians. Residents wishing to participate in these optional tracks must be in good standing and can elect into these tracks toward the end of their intern year. These tracks pair each resident with mentors in their field of choice and provide meaningful, longitudinal collaboration with others in their niche. The following professional longitudinal tracks are offered at Corewell Health Lakeland:
Administration
This track prepares residents for medical staff leadership and ED Medical Director roles immediately following residency. Residents assist the ED Medical Directors, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Executive Officer, and other Institutional leaders in policy development, healthcare quality, operations, economics and finance, healthcare law and governance, and electronic healthcare information systems. Residents will participate in and lead performance improvement projects that focus on patient satisfaction, information technology, and healthcare economics. Formal didactic sessions through national leadership and management forums will supplement the resident’s attendance at ACEP’s Administrative Academy.
EMS
Residents serve as Assistant EMS Medical Directors and participate in numerous operational activities including quality assurance, protocol development and prehospital education, in collaboration with our EMS Medical Director and Medical Control Authority. A variety of clinical opportunities will be offered to the resident including local EMS, EMS physician response vehicle, tactical medicine, and event medicine. Residents will complete and present an EMS-related research project and attend the NAEMSP National EMS Medical Directors Course and Practicum.
Medical Education/Simulation
Residents will receive training in curriculum development; program evaluation; instructional design; faculty, resident and student assessment; leadership and organization; and research in medical education. In addition, residents will enhance their delivery of educational techniques via advanced high-fidelity simulation and procedural task trainers. Residents will attend the CORD Academic Assembly resident track and complete an educational research project focused on innovative curriculum.
Pediatrics
This track is for residents who are interested in developing a deeper experience in pediatric stabilization and critical care. Residents will be given the opportunity for pediatric specific electives both at Corewell Health Lakeland and Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Specifically, these include administration, orthopedics, anesthesiology, NICU, and ENT. Residents in this track will be involved in ED and inpatient focused pediatric quality improvement and research. Resident’s will work closely with our pediatric department, become instructors for PALS and NRP, and will be expected to attend a national Pediatric Emergency Medicine Conference during their time in residency.
Sports Medicine
This track provides residents exposure to the field of sports medicine and builds proficiency in their sports medicine skills. Residents will participate in the planning and management of major regional sporting events, as well as in local sports wellness community activities including pre-participation physical exams for high school athletes, team sport coverage and training room oversight. Residents in this track will complete and present a sports medicine related research project and attend an American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) Annual Conference.
Ultrasound
The bedside application of advanced ultrasonography in the emergency department is stressed in this track. In collaboration with our EM Ultrasound Director, residents will participate in quality assurance initiatives, internal billing audits, medical student and resident education, and policy development. Residents electing this track will complete and present an ultrasound-related research project and attend an AIUM Annual Convention.
Wilderness Medicine
This track prepares residents to earn their Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM) and advance their wilderness knowledge and rescue skills. Residents will become members of the Wilderness Medicine Society and EMRA Wilderness Committee, attend conferences and plan the annual Wilderness Medicine Day. The goal is to expose residents to the multi-faceted world of Wilderness Medicine, earn credits for their FAWM, review survival skills and gain field experience in a variety of outdoor activities.
