Why Lakeland: I have worked at various hospitals from University academic to community throughout the United States. Lakeland offers a similar patient profile as an academic center in a community hospital atmosphere. Teaching medical students, residents, and fellows has always been an important part of my career. Southwest Michigan is a hidden gem with so much to offer to any type of family.

Why Lakeland? I became a doctor with the goal of becoming a medical missionary.  After graduation from the fellowship, my goal was to get on the mission field within 2 years.  I was interviewed by my residency to come back as an ID doc.  When asked, can I work two years and then leave to be a missionary? They responded no.  I was recruited by the Southwestern Medical Clinic, which encouraged me to become a missionary.    While working as a missionary, the SWMC offered me employment at Lakeland every four years when I would spend a year in the States “on furlough”.  I am thankful for the way I was supported through employment and encouraged to continue my career as a full time missionary through SWMC, which has subsequently merged with Lakeland.

I find teaching gives me great satisfaction.  I believe having residents stimulate me to be a better physician.

Why Lakeland?  My wife and I chose to return to Lakeland because of the wonderful sense of community. Lakeland has a very supportive environment with some brilliant and truly caring people. We have made some great friends in St Joseph, and we love the area.  Many people talk about getting a cottage by the lake; we chose to live here.
