Give Blood, Save a Life

by User Not Found | Jan 23, 2017

Blood-Drive-Blog--WEBBlood is often in short supply over the winter months. Due to the busy holiday season, weather, and illness, people are not able to get out and donate. Because of this, January has been named “Blood Donor Month” in an effort to bring awareness to the cause and to increase blood donations.

Lakeland Health partners with Michigan Blood to provide blood to communities throughout southwest Michigan. Patients at all Lakeland hospitals benefit from community blood drives, including those receiving treatment for trauma, surgery, those with bleeding disorders, as well as those undergoing treatment for cancer.

In 2016, Lakeland Health hosted 13 blood drives, where 299 pints of blood were donated, saving a total of 897 lives.

If you plan on donating, here are a few things to keep in mind.

  1. Drink plenty of water.
  2. Eat a full meal prior.
  3. Eating something salty before and after.
  4. Limit activity and exercise after donating.
  5. Be sure to have your photo ID  or two forms of non-photo ID

If you would like to help play a part in saving lives, plan to donate! Next month, there will be two blood drives held at different Lakeland locations.

Friday, February 3
9:30 AM to 3:30 PM
Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph

Wednesday, February 15
