"Tour de Mitt" Bike Ride Raises More than $12,600 for Hospice Care

(ST. JOSEPH) – Less than a month ago, Hospice at Home nurse Dawn Spoon, RN, completed a 450-mile bicycle trip from Mackinac City to Stevensville to raise awareness about hospice services as well as funds for the Merlin and Carolyn Hanson Hospice Center. Thanks to her efforts and the generosity of many in our community, over $12,600 was raised to provide charity room and board for those needing hospice care at the Hanson Hospice Center. The original fundraising goal for the ride was $5,000.

“The ride was certainly a challenge but worth every bit of it,” said Spoon. “We met some incredible people along the way. We shared our story and purpose everywhere; people shared their own hospice stories and how much having the support and involvement of hospice care meant to them.”

During the bicycle trip, Spoon stopped at Munson Area Hospice in Traverse City and Harbor Hospice in Muskegon. In addition to garnering support and encouragement for her journey, Spoon said individuals from each organization intend to ride in the 2015 Tour de Mitt – Bike Ride for Hospice.

“I look forward to connecting and partnering with more hospice teams throughout Michigan in 2015,” Spoon said. “Working together will help bring greater awareness of the benefits and support of hospice care in Michigan.”

Donations to the Merlin and Carolyn Hanson Hospice Center are gratefully accepted throughout the year by calling (269) 429-7100, by mailing to 4025 Health Park Lane, St. Joseph, MI 49120, or donating online at www.hospiceathomecares.org and selecting Hanson Hospice Center when designating funds.
