Okemos, MI—The late Lynn Gray, MD, MPH, FAAFP, a family physician in Berrien Springs, was recognized posthumously with the 2020 Michigan Family Physician of the Year Award during Michigan Academy of Family Physicians’ annual awards celebration, live-streamed on Aug. 8 due to COVID-19.

Michigan Academy of Family Physicians—the largest medical specialty organization in the state—presents this distinguished award to individuals who exemplify the tradition and contributions of the family physician to the continuing health of Michigan residents.

Dr. Gray passed away on June 13.

He was a steadfast advocate for his patients and a long-time member of American Academy of Family Physicians and Michigan Academy of Family Physicians. Since first joining the Academy in 1978, he served in many leadership positions to advance his specialty and support his peers across the state, including 2005-2006 MAFP president, MAFP board member, and Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan trustee. His leadership will be deeply missed.

Dr. Gray practiced family medicine and emergency medicine for more than 40 years in southwest Michigan. He was affiliated with Spectrum Health Lakeland, where he served as medical director for diversity and health equity. He was especially dedicated to promoting the value of and need for family medicine in underserved communities and advocating for increased diversity among family physicians.

A life-long learner, Dr. Gray received his medical degree in 1975 from University of Michigan Medical School, completed residency in 1978 at Grand Rapids Family Medicine Residency, achieved the AAFP Degree of Fellow in 1986, and earned his master’s in public health in 1994 from Loma Linda University School of Public Health.

Founded in 1948, Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) is the state’s largest specialty physician association, with more than 4,200 members who serve primary healthcare needs in Michigan. For more information, visit
