Hospice at Home Medical Director Earns Certification

(ST. JOSEPH) – Jason R. Beckrow, DO, FACOI, Medical Director of Hospice at Home, a Lakeland Health affiliate, was recently granted the Hospice Medical Director Certified credential by the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board. Dr. Beckrow was recognized for his commitment to improving the quality of life of patients by displaying professional competency in the hospice industry.

“We are proud of Dr. Beckrow’s accomplishments and know that his certification will further ensure excellent care to all whom we serve,” said Melinda Graham, Chief Operating Officer, Hospice at Home.

Hospice practice includes patient care, medication management, performance improvement, engagement in interdisciplinary group activities, and much more. Professional certification affirms a knowledge and experience base for hospice practitioners to display commitment to their career, dedication to patient and family care, and the sustainability of the hospice organization and industry. HMDC designation is granted for six years and is renewed through continued validation of knowledge and re-examination.

Dr. Beckrow attended Kalamazoo College and completed his undergraduate education at the Lyman Briggs Honor College of Michigan State University. He attended medical school at MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing, Michigan. This was followed by a Medical Oncology Fellowship conducted through MSU and the Great Lakes Cancer Institute at the Breslin Cancer Center in Lansing.

Dr. Beckrow is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. In addition to his role as Medical Director for Hospice at Home, Dr. Beckrow is a Medical Oncologist and serves as an Adjunct Clinical Professor for MSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Currently, Dr. Beckrow serves as a Consensus Committee Member with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Association of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, which are working collaboratively to develop a national consensus definition for palliative care delivered in the medical oncology setting. Dr. Beckrow is also a member of the American Osteopathic Association’s Council on Palliative Care Issues, is the Chair of AAHPM’s Osteopathic Special Interest Group, and serves as Chair of the Career Development Committee for the Michigan Society of Hematology and Oncology.

The Hospice Medical Director Certification Board (HMDCB) is a not-for-profit certifying body established to design, implement, and evaluate a certification program for hospice medical directors and other physicians who provide hospice care for patients. HMDCB is solely responsible for the development, administration and evaluation of the certification program. The mission of HMDCB is to relieve suffering and improve quality of life by promoting the excellence and professional competency of hospice medical directors.
