Lakeland Team Member Honored with Governor’s Fitness Award
May 1, 2017
(ST. JOSEPH) – Howard Kinglsey, a native of Kalamazoo and safety and security guard at Lakeland Health, was recently honored with a 2017 Governor’s Fitness People’s Choice Award for “Conquering Obesity.” Hosted by the Michigan Fitness Foundation, the Governor’s Fitness Awards honor inspirational individuals and organizations for their pursuit, commitment and dedication to health and wellness. Each award recognizes the many different ways the winners are inspiring and influencing Michigan residents to be healthier.
Kingsley grew up in an unhealthy environment where heart disease was the norm. His father, uncles, and siblings all died at a young age. Due to hip and cardiac issues, coupled with other health problems, Kingsley, an avid cyclist for 18 years, was no longer able to ride his bike and often had to use a cane to get around. Approaching 300 pounds, Kingsley took steps to conquer his obesity including participating in the MyWeigh to Health exercise challenge hosted by Lakeland as well as reduced his portions sizes and cut out processed foods. As a result, he lost a total 69 pounds.
“By losing weight the problems with my hip and other health issues began to improve significantly,” said Kingsley. “I was able to get back on my bike and ride a personal record of 6000 miles as well as complete the Tour de Mitt – a charity bike ride from Mackinaw to Stevensville, Michigan. I didn’t expect to make it past 50 years and here I am at 64 – the lifestyle changes I made and riding my bike truly saved my life. The key to my success and perseverance is always striving toward my personal best, along with the support of my wife Cheryl and my peers at Lakeland.”
Governor’s Fitness Award Winners were honored on April 20 at Cobo Hall Atrium in Detroit. For more information, or to view Kingsley’s full video submission, visit www.michiganfitness.org/gfa
