Funds to Support Art and Wellness Pop-Up Kiosk
(ST. JOSEPH) – The Michigan Health Endowment Fund has awarded Spectrum Health Lakeland with a $55,474 grant in support of a pop-up art and wellness exhibit to help address the behavioral health challenges faced by community members in Southwest Michigan. The Health Fund works to improve the health and wellness of Michigan residents and reduce the cost of healthcare, with a special focus on children and seniors.
The pop-up kiosk is a partnership between the Krasl Art Center (KAC), Spectrum Health Lakeland, local artists, and regional creatives. The goal of the program, based on the Trauma Resource Institute’s Community Resiliency Model®, is to increase understanding of mental health and destigmatize mental illness. Community members are invited to participate in hands-on, arts-based activities that provide opportunities to practice and build resiliency skills.
“We are very grateful for this award,” said Lynn Todman, PhD, executive director for population health, Spectrum Health Lakeland. “The funds will help us provide our community with useful skills and tools for building individual and community resilience. This project is especially important now, given the current and expected mental health challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

"By meeting kids where they are and bringing mental health awareness and activities into public spaces, this project can help reduce the stigma around trauma and other behavioral health challenges."
Once built, the pop-up kiosk will be piloted at the Benton Harbor and St. Joseph public libraries, for approximately six weeks at each site during the summer and fall of 2020, pending regional health recommendations.
