• Routine venipuncture

Clinical Significance

This assay aids in the diagnosis of metabolic bone diseases including Paget disease, osteomalacia, and other states of high bone turnover. The assay is also useful for monitoring the efficacy of antiresorptive therapies including post-menopausal osteoporosis treatment.

This assay is not a screening test for osteoporosis. Diagnosis of osteoporosis should be made on the basis of bone density.

Liver-derivedAlkaline Phosphatase (ALP)has cross-reactivity in this assay: approximately 100 U/L of liver ALP gives a result of 2.5-5.8 mcg/L. Therefore, specimens with significant elevations of liver ALP activity may yield elevated bone ALP results.a
