Fluid: 1mL

Collection Instructions

External Ear:
• Insert sterile swab into ear canal until resistance is met
• Rotate swab and allow fluid to collect on swab

Tympanocentesis Fluid:
• Clean the external canal with mild detergent
• Using a syringe aspiration technique, obtain the fluid from the ear drum
• Deposit the specimen into a sterile screw capped container
• If the ear drum is ruptured, collect exudate by inserting a sterile swab through an auditory speculum
