Wounds: Fluids, tissue or swab in Liquid Stuarts transport medium

Collection Instructions

Wounds:
Syringe Aspiration:
• Cleanse the wound vigorously with saline
• Debride any superficial exudate or necrotic tissue and rinse wound thoroughly
• Avoid touching the wound surface with hands, gloves or any other object
• Gently massage wound margins to squeeze fresh liquid out into wound bed base
• Aspirate a generous amount of liquid, approximatelty 0.5 cc, if possible
• Place the aspirated liquid into the liquid transport system

Superficial Wound Swab Collections:
• Cleanse the wound vigorously with saline
• Debride any superficial exudate or necrotic tissue
• Rinse wound thoroughly with normal saline
• Swab the base of the wound for 30 seconds to ensure an adequate amount of wound fluid is absorbed for testing. Swab the clean, granulating tissue
• Avoid touching and swabbing the wound margins and peri-wound surface

Ulcers and Nodules:
• Clean the area with 70% alcohol and then with an iodine solution (1 to 2% tincture of iodine or a 10% solution of povidone-iodine (1% free iodine). Tincture of iodine must be removed with alcohol after the procedure to prevent burns
• Remove overlying debris
• Curette the base of the ulcer or nodule
• If exudate is present from ulcer of nodule, collect it with a syringe or sterile swab

Indwelling Catherized Urine (If cathetered longer than 7 days):
• Cleanse surface of puncture site (Foley port) with alcohol swab
• Insert needle through center of port and withdraw a minimum of 10cc urine
• Carefully expel urine from syringe into appropriate sterile specimen container

Tracheostomy Secretions:
• Collect according to nursing manual for this source
