• To begin collection of timed specimen, have patient urinate, noting the date and exact time

• Save all urine voided during the 2 hours, including the portion voided at exact end of time period

• Document date and time of final voiding on the label and requisition as the “end” of the timed specimen

Remarks

Unpreserved urine samples may lose up to 40% of their glucose after 24-hour storage at room temperature. Therefore, keep samples on ice or refrigerated during collection.

Clinical Significance

Glucose measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of carbohydrate metabolism disorders including diabetes mellitus, neonatal hypoglycemia, idiopathic hypoglycemia, and of pancreatic islet cell carcinoma.

 

This assay is used to Evaluate glucosuria, renal tubular defects and to manage diabetes mellitus.
