Collection Instructions

• Routine venipuncture
Immediately after collection, gently invert tube 5-10 times

Transportation Instructions

• Serum tubes: Clot 30 minutes

• All tubes: Promptly centrifuge 15 minutes
Immediately transfer serum from Red top tube or plasma from Green top tube to separate plastic tube
• Properly centrifuged SST (gel barrier) tube sample does not require transfer of serum to separate tube

Patient Preparation: Document on the requisition if patient received iron therapy or recent transfusion
• When possible, collect specimen prior to patient receiving therapeutic iron or blood transfusion.
• If transfused, wait at least 4 days after transfusion to collect test.
