CSF: Spinal Fluid Collection tube or pour-over tube
Blood: Gold top (SST) tube (needs to be collected within 72 hours of the spinal fluid specimen, preferably at the same time)

Min. Vol.: 1.0 mL

Blood:
Pref. Vol.: 5.0 mL
Min. Vol.: 2.0 mL

Collection Instructions

• CSF collected by lumbar, ventricular or cisternal puncture into plastic sterile tubes
• Routine venipuncture
• Immediately after collection, gently invert tube 5-10 times
• Promptly centrifuge 15 minutes
• Refrigerate within 2 hours of collection

• Refrigerated (preferred): 7 days
• Frozen: 1 month

Serum:
• Room Temperature: 8 hours
• Refrigerated (preferred): 7 days

Remarks

Two specimen types (CSF, serum)- both specimens should be drawn and received together; however, serum collected within 72 hours of the CSF collection will be acceptable
