Collection Instructions

Vaginal / ano-rectal swab:
• Wipe away excessive amounts of secretion or discharge
• Remove swab from the transport container
• Carefully insert swab into the patient's vagina
• Sample secretions from the mucosa of the lower one-third part of the vagina by rotating the swab three times to ensure uniform sample on both swabs
• Using the same swab, carefully insert it approximately 2.5cm beyond the anal sphincter, and gently rotate to sample anal crypts
• Place swab in original transport container

• Store at room temperature if transported within 24 hours of collection
• Store refrigerated (2-6°C) if transport is delayed for greater than 24 hours

Causes for Rejection

• Specimen submitted in transport medium other than Liquid Stuarts
• Specimens other than vaginal/ano-rectal

Remarks

NOTE: If PCR assay does not yield results, the LIMM broth culture method will be performed on the same sample

• Collect prior to speculum insertion
• Do NOT use lubricant
