Collection Instructions

• Performed by physician
• Place fresh synovial fluid in lavender top (EDTA) tube and any excess fluid in a sterile container.

Transportation Instructions

• Maintain at room temperature
• Transport to the laboratory as soon as possible

Cell Count: 24 hours
Crystal Examination: 72 hours when refrigerated past 24 hours.

Causes for Rejection

Not maintained at room temperature

Remarks

Powdered EDTA and lithium heparin should not be used because artifacts may interfere with the microscopic examination of crystals. BD Vacutainer® Lavender top (EDTA) tubes contain sprayed-on liquid EDTA and are the preferred collection tube.

Clinical Significance

Synovial fluid analysis is a group of tests that examine joint (synovial) fluid. Synovial fluid analysis may be ordered to help diagnose the cause of joint inflammation, pain, swelling, and fluid accumulation.
