Urine, Urethral discharge, or prostatic secretions: Yellow top (no preservative) urine tube

Swabs: 1 E-swab

Urine: 10 mL urine preferred, 1 mL minimum.

Urethral discharge or prostatic secretions: As much specimen that is available

Collection Instructions

Prior to collection, contact the laboratory for courier service

Swabs:

» Collect with E swab

» Insert swab in transport tube

 

Fluid:

»Urethral discharge, urine and prostatic secretions after prostatic massage

»Place excessive secretion material in sterile, plastic container

Transportation Instructions

Maintain at room temperature

Clinical Significance

Trichomonas vaginalis infections are diagnosed by detecting live motile flagellates from direct saline (wet) mounts. Microscope slides made from patient specimens can be examined under low and high power for the presence of actively moving organisms.
