Endovenous Laser Therapy

Endovenous thermal ablation, also called laser therapy, is a newer technique that uses a laser or high-frequency radio waves to create intense local heat in the varicose vein or incompetent vein.

A Venous Doppler Ultrasound is a diagnostic test used to check the circulation in the Deep and Superficial veins in the legs. This exam shows shows any blockage in the veins by a blood clot or "thrombus" formation as well as whether or not the valves within the veins are pumping the blood back to the heart adequately.

An endovenous laser ablation procedure treats venous reflux disease in the superficial venous system, which is most commonly the underlying cause of painful, swollen varicose veins.

There are many reasons why patients may want to consider treating their veins using endovenous lasers. This treatment provides:

  • A reduced chance of developing stasis ulcers
  • Significant relief from discomfort such as aches, heaviness and pain
  • More efficient blood circulation
  • An improved body image and confidence in one’s appearance
  • A minimally invasive, quick and easy treatment option

Heat is directed through a catheter to close up the targeted vessel. This treatment closes off the problem veins but leaves them in place so there is minimal bleeding and bruising.

Compared with ligation and stripping, many patients find that endovenous thermal ablation results in less pain and a faster return to normal activities, with similar cosmetic results.

The goals of treatment are to reduce symptoms and reduce the risk of complications from venous disease, including blood clots.
