My family was the first of more than 33,500 individuals, who have been cared for by Lory’s Place after the death of a loved one.

Our loss was my wife, Dr. Lory Schults. On a snowy January morning in 2004 Lory suffered fatal injuries in a car accident. In a split second our family was changed forever. Our new normal had begun. Lory’s Place was created in her honor and continues to carry her legacy.

This coming January will mark the 15th anniversary of life without Lory. It has been a difficult journey, one filled with extreme pain, sorrow and mourning. However, this journey has also been filled with healing, love, laughter, and joy.

To lose a mother as children aged five and three is an incredibly life-changing event. I now watch as both of my children make life choices that are pathways to purposeful and fulfilling lives as young adults.

My son, Erik is now in his third year of civil engineering at Michigan Tech and moving forward with confidence in his career choice. And my daughter, Sophia is in high school and continues her passion of horses, training with the US Dressage team.

Erik touches on this difficult journey.

"I don’t think most people know how much of an effect it has when someone in your life dies. It impacts the entire family," said Erik. "At Lory’s Place they are able to understand what you’re going through."

It is humbling to know that when we lost Lory, our community gained a champion. Lory’s Place became a reality in only nine months. It is a safe place where those who are grieving become dear friends who understand.

Our family wants you to understand that we suffered a great loss – and we walked an incredibly difficult journey for many years – but right now we have found our new normal. There is joy in our normal. Erik, Sophia, and I have our hearts set on the future with hope and determination to do life well.
