We all suffer from a bad night of sleep from time to time, but imagine if, nightly, you awoke to extreme pain that just wouldn’t go away?

That was the harsh reality for Kevin Ivers. The 59-year-old Berrien RESA Superintendent’s love of running came to an abrupt halt after he was diagnosed with trochanteric, or hip, bursitis. The condition can cause significant hip and thigh pain that gets worse with physical activity, and at night, when a person has been lying down for a long time.

“It started as a dull, throbbing pain and got much worse,” said Kevin. “I was scared I would never be able to run again.”

Kevin was referred by primary care physician, Dan Hayward, MD, to an orthopedic surgeon who offered options for physical therapy. Kevin ended up putting in a call to Lakeland Orthopedic Physical Therapy, where he was connected to Sara McComish, DPT.

“It was one of the best decisions I ever made,” said Kevin. “Sara’s approach was very different from what I had encountered before. Her assessment was very thorough. She targeted the hip bursitis right away and gave me a list of exercises focused on stretching.”

Kevin now visits the gym three times a week where he follows a strict routine using bands, foam rollers and machines that target the tissue, or ligament, around his hip. Kevin says he’s committed to the program, because it works.

“Sara warned me it was going to be a long road,” said Kevin. “Thanks to her, I learned that I wasn’t stretching my muscles enough, which caused the bursa sacs to become inflamed. Now I follow her exercise routine, faithfully.”

Kevin says, through it all, Sara has been a strong supporter. He’s so thankful that he was able to get better, without needing surgery.

“I feel great,” said Kevin.  “Thirteen weeks later I am back to sleeping through the night. I really liked the atmosphere of Lakeland Orthopedic Physical Therapy. They were positive and encouraging and really work to help you heal and get better.”

Lakeland Orthopedic Physical Therapy is located in the Center for Outpatient Services in St. Joseph. For more information on their athletic training program and physical therapy services, call: (269) 556-7150.
