(ST. JOSEPH) - Corewell Health South, formerly Spectrum Health Lakeland, recently released the 2022 cancer care report which looks at cancer cases locally and nationally to understand trends, support cancer research, measure progress in prevention efforts, and improve cancer outcomes.

In 2021, 1,193 total cancer cases were treated at Corewell Health South and added to the National Cancer Data Base. Of those patients:

  • Five most common cancer sites in order of prevalence: breast, lung, prostate, colorectal, and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Gender distribution: 54.82% female, .08% transgender assigned female at birth, 45.01% male, and .08% transgender assigned male at birth
  • Age distribution: 72.17% age 60 years and older, 25.98% between the ages of 30 and 59, and 1.84% age 29 years or younger
  • Mean age of cancer patients: 65 years

Corewell Health South is accredited with commendation by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program. The Radiation Oncology Department is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). In addition, Corewell Health South is fully accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons, the College of American Pathologists, and Laboratory Accreditation Certified.

“Our cancer program at Corewell Health South is comprised of an exceptional multidisciplinary team offering care to our community that is high quality and compassionate,” said Andrea Bauman, senior director of oncology services, Corewell Health South. “Accreditation from these organizations validates the achievement of the high standards we strive for and should give our patients the confidence to walk through their cancer journey close to home.”
