Honoring the life and legacy of Stephen E. Upton
Dec 28, 2022

With heavy hearts we share the passing of Stephen E. Upton who died on December 27, 2022, at the age of 98. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and the many individuals who knew and loved him.

Steve, as many called him, was the son of a co-founder of Whirlpool Corporation, later serving as a senior vice president with the organization, a World War II veteran, and beloved family man. Often referred to as a “true servant of the community,” Steve leaves behind a family legacy of philanthropic efforts and generous support to improve the Southwest Michigan community.

Steve, his wife Elizabeth, and their family foundation have generously supported the work and mission of Corewell Health South for many years. Their most notable contributions helped establish the Frederick S. Upton Memorial Nursing Scholarship as well as the Frederick S. Upton Education Center and the new Margaret B. Upton Auditorium at the St. Joseph Hospital which will provide continued educational opportunities for our community and team members for years to come.

The Upton's also contributed to several other major building projects including the Marie Yeager Cancer Center, Center for Outpatient Services, Lory’s Place, the Hanson Hospice Center, St. Joseph Hospital inpatient tower and Pavilion, and Watervliet Hospital emergency room expansion, among others.

“We are fortunate to have a friend and neighbor like Steve who cared so deeply about his community and the needs of others,” said Loren B. Hamel, MD, president, Corewell Health South. “We will miss him so very much and take comfort in knowing that his personal legacy, and that of his family's foundation, will continue to live on and bless our future generations.”
