Although her children are now grown and have moved away, Jean Roberts, 83, was determined to continue living independently in the St. Joseph home she had resided in for the past 57 years. This determination is what encouraged her and her daughter Debbie Angvick, both nurses by trade, to enlist the services of Lakeland CallSafe.

Jean was equipped with a CallSafe Help Button, that in an emergency, would connect her with Care Center professionals who would respond immediately, assess the situation, and send the type of help requested.

“My CallSafe button gives me the confidence I need to continue living on my own,” said Jean. “It is great knowing that someone will be there if I ever need them. I wear it around my neck at all times when home alone.”

Jean’s Help Button also provides Debbie peace of mind while living two hours away outside of Chicago, Illinois.

“I can’t always be there for my mom, but knowing she will still be cared for in a timely manner if something were to happen helps put my mind at ease when I’m away,” said Debbie.

The family’s preparation may have been what saved Jean’s life after she fell on the garage floor last winter fracturing her right hip, and leaving her unable to move. Thankfully, Jean was wearing her Lakeland CallSafe Help Button.

Jean initiated a call for help but was too far away from the receiver box to hear or respond to the Care Center staff so they dispatched emergency personnel. When paramedics arrived, the house was locked and they could not see her. She saw a hand waving through the garage window and began yelling for help. After locating Jean, medical responders transported her to Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph to receive further care.

“I am so thankful for the Care Center staff and medical providers who came to my rescue,” said Jean. “Even though they had a hard time finding me because I was lying on the ground, they never gave up.”

While at the hospital, orthopedic surgeon, Justin Sybesma, MD, performed surgery to repair Jean’s hip. From there, she was welcomed at Pine Ridge: A Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility where she completed physical therapy to help her regain strength.

Jean is now a resident at The Whitcomb, a senior living community in St. Joseph. She still wears a Lakeland CallSafe Help Button that will quickly notify staff members in the event of an emergency.
