Lakeland Neurosurgeon Joins Spine Surgery Collaborative
Jan 29, 2021
(ST. JOSEPH) – Neurosurgeon, Rafeek Woods, MD, recently joined the Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MSSIC) as a surgery champion on behalf of Spectrum Health Lakeland. MSSIC is a statewide quality improvement collaborative involving hospitals, orthopedic surgeons, and neurosurgeons who seek to improve the care and outcomes of patients who undergo spine surgery.
The work of MSSIC focuses on surgeries which alter the structure of the spine itself, in the cervical or lumbar regions, such as stenosis, disk herniation, and degenerative disease. By capturing data from commonly performed cases it offers the greatest ability to compare outcomes by surgeon and by hospital, and the greatest potential opportunity for benefit to patients through quality improvement.
“I look forward to collaborating with surgeons from across the state of Michigan to compare and improve results of relatively common spine surgery cases for which pain relief and restoration of function are primary treatment goals,” said Dr. Woods. “My hope is that through our involvement with this collaborative we are able to provide better patient outcomes and improved quality for our patients here in Southwest Michigan.”
