Lakeland Celebrates Volunteers at Annual Luncheon
Apr 29, 2019 Share

On Thursday, April 25, Spectrum Health Lakeland had the opportunity to celebrate and give heartfelt thanks to all of our volunteers. These community members give their time and talent to make Lakeland a better place for patients, visitors, and team members.

In 2018, 712 volunteers donated a total of 71,145 hours. These hours represent the work of 31 full-time team members! They also raised $132,000 in auxiliary cash donations, including $12,000 in scholarships, among other accomplishments.

In honor of Volunteer Week, and our recent banquet, we asked three individuals to share what they love about volunteering at Lakeland.

Sid Stark has been a volunteer for 10 years. He volunteers in the Courtyard Café and does companion visits between South Haven and Niles. “When I talk to patients, it brings a smile to their face as they relive their past experiences,” he said. “One of the most memorable experiences was with a man who was in the Merchant Marines. I visited him at his home for almost 5 years.”

Sandy Vigansky has volunteered in Surgery for approximately 2 years. She has also volunteered for Hospice. “I love to help,” she said. “The nurses are always so busy taking care of others, the least I can do is help them where I can. They are so appreciative of everything I do to make it just a little easier for them. I can’t help but enjoy it.”

Zach Kreiner has volunteered in the ER for a year. “Being able to work side by side with doctors, nurses, and techs is absolutely amazing,” he said. “You get to see a different side of medicine. You get to see that it takes many different people from different departments working on one patient, all for the same goal— to make them healthier. It’s an incredible thing to witness, and it never gets old.”

If you see a volunteer, please take time to thank them for their time, support, and continued service to Spectrum Health Lakeland and our community.
