Honoring the life of Merlin Hanson (1927-2022)

With heavy hearts we share the passing of Merlin Hanson, who died on June 21, 2022. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and many friends whom he loved, and who loved him, so deeply.

His impact as an innovative business leader, humble and disciplined worker, and passionate philanthropist has left an enduring legacy in our community.

Merlin was born in South Bend, Indiana, to two deaf parents. After time spent in the Navy, he began a career in the tool and die business, founding Weldun Industries with a friend. Following this success, Merlin owned and led mold fabrication, cold storage, and beverage enterprises.

Merlin, his wife Carolyn, and their family foundation have been momentous friends and supporters of Spectrum Health Lakeland for many years. Their most notable contributions include a major gift to the Hanson Heart Center within the Lakeland Medical Center Pavilion and a cornerstone lead gift to the Merlin and Carolyn Hanson Hospice Center—the first facility of its kind in Southwest Michigan. Both personally, and through their foundation, the Hanson's have also enhanced the mission and work of Lory’s Place—a grief healing and education center.

"Merlin was a friend, a mentor, and a visionary leader who dedicated his life’s work to making Southwest Michigan a better place for all," said Loren B. Hamel, MD, President, Spectrum Health Lakeland. "We will miss Merlin dearly and take comfort in knowing his legacy will continue through the many lives he touched during his time here on Earth."

In 2016, Merlin Hanson was featured in a Legends of Michiana documentary highlighting his life. If you would like to watch his story, click here. We invite you to share your condolences and thoughts for the Hanson family on the Spectrum Health Lakeland Facebook page.
