Feb 2, 2021 Share

The Speakers Series of South Haven leads off its 2021 season with a presentation focused on the “Inside Story of the Virus and the Vaccine” on February 18 at 2 p.m. with a rebroadcast at 7 p.m. This exclusive virtual presentation, streamed live from Washington D.C., will feature Dr. H. Clifford Lane, M.D., Deputy Director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Disease, who serves on a team of scientists led by Anthony Fauci who heads up the NIAID.

“Dr. Lane is highly credentialed and qualified to address the science behind the COVID-19 virus and the early success of the vaccines that have been rapidly developed,” said Mark Odland, President of the Series.

Dr. Lane will provide his findings on the virus, where it came from, how it got started, and how it spread so quickly and broadly throughout the United States. He will share stories about what he learned about the virus during his trip to China in February 2020 as one of two U.S. scientists to tour five different cities to get a firsthand look at the epidemic. You will hear his expert opinion on the vaccine and how it combats the virus, how it differs from other vaccines and how it was developed so quickly. We will also hear his views on what we have learned to prevent future pandemics and how the method used to develop this vaccine can be used in the future as we encounter new diseases.

Dr. Lane is a native of Detroit and attended the University of Michigan where he earned his bachelors degree in 1972 and his M.D. in 1976. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan Hospital and served in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps from 1979 to 2008 where he achieved the rank of Rear Admiral and served as Assistant Surgeon General. He has done extensive research on the HIV disease that has been instrumental in developing advanced HIV treatments.

“The Speakers Series is collaborating with the Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College and is pleased to present this event at no charge to the public. We believe this topic is of such relevance and critical importance for our audience and want to assure there are no financial barriers to attendance,” said Odland.
