In October of this year, I had the opportunity to go on an incredible mission trip to Togo, West Africa. I accompanied a general surgeon from Lakeland, Dr. Craig Kline, who served as an excellent mentor and teacher. While in Togo, I assisted in performing close to 60 surgical cases ranging from hernia repairs to large tumor removals. We were also able to explore the beautiful jungle of Sub-Saharan Africa as well as the unique culture of the African people. It was a true blessing to be able to use the skills acquired through residency training at Lakeland to change the lives of a group of people with little to no access to healthcare.
