Work Out at Work with Under-Desk Exercise Options

Even when you’re trying your best to fit physical activity into your day, a busy work schedule can make it hard. But it’s an important goal because sitting for hours at a time increases your risk for conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease.

One solution might help both problems: under-desk exercise equipment, such as mini-bikes or compact elliptical trainers. Here’s what you should know about these mini-machines.

Where can you use under-desk ellipticals or bicycles?

Just about anywhere. In addition to the office, you can pedal from your couch or a chair at home.

What are the benefits?

Research suggests pedaling while you sit can:

  • Burn more calories throughout the day

  • Reduce your blood pressure

  • Control blood sugar

  • Improve focus and memory

  • Reduce lower back pain

These machines also make it easier for people with mobility problems to exercise.

Do they provide a good workout?

Government guidelines recommend adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise weekly. Pedaling while sitting may or may not count. It depends on how hard you push—and your fitness level when starting out.

When you’re doing moderate activity, you should be able to talk, but not sing. If you’re just starting out or getting back to a fitness routine after a while, these machines may get you there. And regardless, you still get the benefits noted above.

Either way, pair mini-machine workouts with strength training. This type of activity is important for keeping bones strong, especially as you age. The same guidelines recommend all adults do this at least twice per week as well.

How can you choose the best option for you?

First, check with your health care provider before starting a new exercise program. Then, measure to make sure the machine fits your space and feels comfortable.

Think about what features matter to you. Look for models with adjustable resistance, to make pedaling feel easier or harder. Many will also track steps, distance, speed, and calories burned.

Also, consider price and warranty terms. Check with your insurance company, too. Some offer discounts on certain brands.
