Weight that is higher than what is
considered healthy for a given height is
described as being overweight or obese.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening tool
used to help determine this. In general,
a person who has a BMI of 40 or more is
diagnosed as morbidly obese.
The National Institutes of Health report
that morbid obesity may considerably reduce
life expectancy and is associated with an
increased risk of developing conditions
or diseases such as:
- Diabetes
- Stroke
- Hypertension
- Joint problems
- Sleep apnea
- Cancer
- Coronary artery disease
- Respiratory problems
The good news is, losing as little as 5%
to 10% of total body weight can reduce the
risk for many of these illnesses. It can also
improve blood pressure, blood sugar,
and cholesterol.
