da Vinci Surgery

With the da Vinci® Surgical System, surgeons operate through just a few small incisions. The da Vinci System features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist. As a result, da Vinci enables your surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control.

Minimally invasive da Vinci uses the latest in surgical and robotics technologies. da Vinci is beneficial for performing routine and complex surgery. Your surgeon is 100% in control of the da Vinci System, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside your body. da Vinci – taking surgery beyond the limits of the human hand.

When compared to traditional surgical procedures, the da Vinci System offers a number of benefits including:

  • Faster recovery
  • Less pain
  • Minimal curring
  • Minimal scarring
  • Reduced blood loss and need for blood transfusions
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Smaller incisions

During a radical prostatectomy, five tiny cuts are made in the abdomen. The EndoWrists are attached to the robotic arms on the da Vinci System and placed into four cuts that have been made in the abdomen. The fifth cut is used for the vision system, which allows the surgeon to view the operative site three-dimensionally. Using this vision system, the surgeon can see the prostate from any viewpoint and avoid important structures, such as the nerves that control potency and bladder control.

Some men who have had surgery performed by the da Vinci System reported that they didn’t need pain medication after surgery. Many men regained control of their bladders and achieved erections within weeks of surgery.
