Earn Continuing Medical Education Credit through Free Ethics Presentation
Jul 2, 2019 Share

Every two months, the Office of Clinical Ethics at Spectrum Health presents a different clinical ethics education topic in an effort to educate team members and provide the opportunity to earn continuing medical education credit (CME) if you are a social worker, physician, APP, or nurse (RN or LPN).

Throughout July and August, the topic presented will be Ethics and Cultural Competency in Health Care: Caring for the LGBTQIA+ Community. At the end of each session, attendees will have a deeper understanding of the following:

  • LGBTQIA+ terms
  • The meaning and impact of intersectionality
  • The influence of language in conversations with patients
  • Ethical dilemmas impacting care and patient experiences for those identifying as part of the LGBTQIA+ community
  • The resources available to expand their knowledge and help provide support to members of the LGBTQIA+ community in health care

All education sessions are offered via WebEx, providing the opportunity to participate to any team member who has access to a phone and computer or laptop with internet access.

The sessions are free of charge to all team members. You must participate in one of the following 75-minute presentations and complete the evaluation to earn 1.0 CME/CEU hours:

When you join the WebEx, follow these strategies for the best results:

  • Join the WebEx 5-15 minutes before the presentation starts
  • For audio options, have the WebEx system call you (instead of you calling in). This allows the host to see a list of all WebEx participants
  • For your own privacy, please turn off the camera on your laptop, or cover the camera with a piece of paper
  • Everyone who expects to receive continuing education credits, whether CEUs or CMEs, must sign in using their first and last name, credentials, and email address when they log into the Webex. Without this, there is no way to authenticate that an individual participated for the entire session.

All social workers need to sign in, sign out, and write their license numbers on the sign-in sheet provided ahead of the session, regardless of whether they participate in a group or solo. If several people are viewing the WebEx together, please use the sign-in sheet to document each name/SW license number.  This is the mechanism for the Social Work Continuing Education Committee to provide CEs to each participant in a group.

Throughout the year, watch for additional opportunities to hear other topics presented.
