ST. JOSEPH, Mich., August 23, 2023 - In collaboration with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Southwest Michigan, Corewell Health Lakeland Hospitals - St. Joseph Hospital is hosting an inaugural art show event, focusing on the power of art and creativity. Children ages 6-18 from St. Joseph, Benton Harbor, Bridgman and Sturgis Boys and Girls Club locations submitted their artwork. Through Aug. 30, guests are invited to view Judges Choice Award and Honorable Mention entries near the registration area inside the hospital.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Southwest Michigan, a local nonprofit established in 1998, provides children with access to recreational and extracurricular activities, after-school tutoring, mentoring and healthy lifestyle programming.

“We are delighted to partner with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southwest Michigan for this unique opportunity to share students’ talent and creativity with our friends and neighbors who visit our facilities,” said Loren B. Hamel, M.D., president, Corewell Health South. “We know that art is an important component of healing and has been shown to help reduce stress, improve cognitive function, foster self-esteem, and build emotional resilience and social skills.”

The event celebrated the work of 100 local youth whose talents were exhibited on the hospital’s 90-foot wall of digital screens for staff, patients and visitors to enjoy. All featured artwork received a ribbon.

“We were very excited about the invitation to take part in the art show," said Alloyd Blackmon, chief executive officer, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Southwest Michigan. "Partnering with Corewell Health directly aligns with our mission to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential. The event encouraged children of all backgrounds to express their individuality through art."
