• To begin collection of timed specimen, have patient urinate, noting the date and exact time

• Save all urine voided during the 2 hours, including the portion voided at exact end of time period

• Document date and time of final voiding on the label and requisition as the “end” of the timed specimen

Clinical Significance

Creatinine excretion is increased in diseases with increased muscle breakdown; highest figures obtained with muscular dystrophy, smaller elevations with denervations and polymyositis. In a person with normal renal function the urine creatinine excretion is relatively constant day to day.

 

This assay is used in the diagnosis and treatment of renal diseases, in monitoring renal dialysis, and as a calculation basis for measuring other urine analytes.
