Collection Instructions

Patient Preparation:
• Cleanse skin over venipuncture site with ChloraPrep® from kit
• Using aseptic technique, remove the ChloraPrep® from its package, assuring its sterility
• Hold applicator with sponge facing downward and squeeze wings gently releasing solution for a controlled flow
• Press sponge against skin and apply ChloraPrep® solution using back and forth friction scrub for 30 seconds
• Allow area to dry
• Do not palpate site after prep
• Collect sufficient volume of blood in sterile plastic syringe or use direct draw adapter
• Inoculate media with appropriate amount of specimen
• Patient name, date and time of collection, amount of blood collected (when applicable), and phlebotomist tech code must be written on labels and requisition
• Do not place labels over any existing barcode labels

Transportation Instructions

• Room temperature
• Do not refrigerate or incubate

Stability

24 hours at room temperature

Causes for Rejection

• Blood Culture bottles broth cloudy
• Bottle sensor not intact
• Sensor off color (should be green)
• Blood Culture bottle overfilled
• No patient identification on blood culture bottles

Remarks

• If possible, collect specimens prior to initiation of antimicrobial therapy. Otherwise, document current therapy on requisition
• If more than 1 culture ordered, collect specimens from separately prepared sites
• Strict aseptic technique is essential
