Cerebrospinal Fluid:
• Collected by lumbar, ventricular or cisternal puncture into sterile plastic tubes
• Inject anaerobic transport media immediately after collection

Swab/Culture Collection Guidelines

Transportation Instructions

Media maintains organisms up to 24 hours after inoculation

Causes for Rejection

• Air contamination
• Specimens not transferred to anaerobic media
• Specimens from site with known indigenous anaerobic flora
• Swabs, although not rejected are less reliable for anaerobic recovery
