Quality Sleep Equals Improved Health

“If you frequently experience consequences of poor sleep and your symptoms do not resolve with improved sleep hygiene, consult your physician or a sleep specialist. Sleep disorders, if left untreated, can lead to significant health problems.” —Inga Sriubiene, MD, Medical Director, Lakeland Sleep Disorder and Treatment Center

At Home Sleep Testing

aasm_accreditedmemcenter_logoThe Lakeland Sleep Disorder and Treatment Centers in Niles and St. Joseph are designed to combine the latest treatments with a home-like atmosphere. Patients sleep in rooms that feature queen-sized beds, cable televisions, and private, accessible bathrooms in an environment that controls sound and light. Our sleep centers are accredited with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and each of our sleep lab technologists are registered with the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists.

We spend around one-third of our lives sleeping. Yet, experts don’t know exactly why. What they do know, is that good sleep is vital to your health.

Untreated sleep disorders can lead to:

  • Headaches
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Stroke
  • Drowsy driving

You might think your body is in a passive state while you’re sleeping, but this isn’t the case.

“Sleep is a highly active process during which our bodies recover from all the work they did while we were awake,” said Inga Sriubiene, MD, Medical Director, Lakeland Sleep Disorder and Treatment Center. “Research suggests sleep plays an important role in memory, learning, immune function, and metabolism, among many other vital bodily functions.”

Lakeland Sleep Disorder and Treatment Centers can diagnose and treat sleep-related disorders, including sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, daytime sleepiness, snoring and other sleep disorders.

What to expect during a Sleep Study

A full sleep study goes beyond simply measuring oxygen levels in the patient.

Our recently upgraded state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment monitors:

  • brain activity
  • breathing problems
  • oxygen levels
  • heart rhythms
  • snoring
  • muscle activity

All data, audio, and video are provided to the sleep physician in a comprehensive evaluation of the patient's sleep habits.

Lakeland Sleep Centers also offer sleep testing for DOT workers and are Home Sleep Apnea Testing accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is estimated to affect 20% of adults in the United States, with 85% of cases remaining undiagnosed.

Sleep apnea patients often suffer from:

  • excessive weight and hypertension
  • may present with frequent, loud snoring
  • daytime fatigue or sleepiness
  • gasping or choking during the night
