Higher Aim

Jul 25, 2017
Better health. Better health care. Lower cost.

Sunshine

Jul 11, 2017
It’s summer and it’s sunny. It’s hard not to feel grateful for blue skies and warm temperatures.

Good Night

Jun 06, 2017
How did you sleep last night?

The Heart of Lakeland

May 16, 2017
By now you should have received your new “badge backer.” It has a new message on it: “I’m the Heart of Lakeland.”

We’ve Been Blessed

Apr 25, 2017
He wasn’t our typical volunteer. He was younger than average. In fact, he had not completed high school. But he was a volunteer in our emergency room in the Medical Center in St. Joseph.

Too early?

Apr 11, 2017
It’s a common reaction. Most of us would rather put off “the discussion” as long as possible. But it’s not as difficult as most people think, and it’s easier now than it will be later.

New Season

Mar 28, 2017
Time passes. Things change. It’s as inevitable as the arrival of spring. So, what’s your reaction? Does this season make you wistful? Or, does it make you hopeful? Maybe it’s so predictable that you don’t even stop to think about it anymore.

Behind the Awards

Feb 28, 2017
So maybe it’s not exactly like Hollywood. There are no expensive gowns, tuxedos, paparazzi, and no political views.

Enough Love?

Feb 13, 2017
A lot of love will be shared this week. In fact, 150 million cards and more than 220 million roses will exchange hands. About six million Americans expect a marriage proposal on February 14.

So Much with So Little

Feb 01, 2017
The excitement in her voice was unmistakable. Her stories were almost unbelievable. Dr. Kim Stillman, a third-year emergency medicine resident at Lakeland, had just returned from Mattru Hospital in the West African country of Sierra Leone.

A Life Saved

Jan 17, 2017
The pain was excruciating. My brother-in-law, Lewis, lay in a crumpled heap, on the ground—he was going into shock. His gray roan horse, Smoke, was galloping back to her stable.

Pardon our Dirt

Jan 04, 2017
Perhaps you’ve seen the common “Pardon our Dust” sign—it’s often located near a facility where construction or renovation is taking place. Given what is happening to the Lab and Tower parking lots at the Medical Center in St. Joseph, that sign seems completely inadequate.

Warm and Cozy

Dec 21, 2016
You saw the headlines early this week—record cold across the U.S., potentially one of the coldest holiday seasons ever. It makes me want to light a fire in my fireplace and watch the snow fall from the comfort of my warm home in the woods.

Triple Aim, Triple Play

Dec 06, 2016
What Ida wanted most was to be able to care for her family. She was only 45 years old and suffered from hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, and congestive heart failure. Her diseases were taking a toll.

Politics Aside

Nov 21, 2016
You may have spent the last two weeks with a sense of discouragement, or even depression. On the other hand, you may have experienced a new sense of optimism or even excitement.

Out of the Park

Nov 10, 2016
There are some events that just make you want to high five or fist pump. One of those events occurred last week.

Life and Limb

Nov 07, 2016
It was Memorial Day weekend. She was playing tag with a youth group she led at church, when her foot got caught under a piece of playground equipment. Her leg hyperextended and her tibia shattered just below the knee. An X-ray in the Emergency Department at Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph, confirmed the fracture. Rahel learned there were eight other patients with broken bones ahead of her. She would be number nine.

Love and Respect

Nov 07, 2016
The words caught my attention. Although I use them frequently, this time they were not my words. They were the words of Raymond Massie of Hartford. They were recently published in the Herald Palladium as a Letter to the Editor.

Happy Anniversary

Nov 07, 2016
Maggie Waterlander can also tell you stories about the five department leaders and the five CEOs that have served at Lakeland during her tenure. But you’ll have to ask her yourself for those memories. She took a job in the Medical Records Department...and she’s still working there 60 years later!

What Happened to You?

Nov 04, 2016
The research findings were unsettling. It was a cruel experiment. Mice were given an electric shock while smelling cherry blossoms. As you can imagine, they soon became afraid whenever they smelled cherry blossoms – even when they weren’t shocked. Here’s the startling part.
