New Trailhead Completed at Lakeland Hospital Niles

by Abigail Tippin | Nov 08, 2019
A new trailhead links Lakeland Hospital Niles to the Indiana Michigan River Valley Trail.

A new trailhead on the campus of Lakeland Hospital Niles has recently been completed. Lakeland team members, visitors, and the community can make use of the trail to walk, jog, bike, or hike. Supported by state grant funding and the City of Niles, the Niles Riverwalk is part of a much larger trail network called the Indiana Michigan River Valley Trail, which connects Niles to South Bend and Mishawaka.

A ribbon cutting was held on Saturday, November 9 for not only the Lakeland Campus trailhead but also for the portion of the trail being completed from Brandywine Creek Nature Park to the City of Niles. This is the last connection in Michigan from Niles to the state line of Indiana. The ribbon cutting was a traveling celebration of decades of work to complete 34 miles of trail connecting Mishawaka, South Bend, and Niles.

Work is ongoing to connect the trail to Berrien Springs and St. Joseph and Benton Harbor.
