Veteran Support Services Integrate with Spectrum Health
Aug 26, 2019
To enhance the patient experience of the military veterans we serve, Spectrum Health and Lakeland have integrated veteran support services. By aligning the We Honor Veterans program at Caring Circle with the Veteran Support Services program at Spectrum Health, veteran centered healthcare has been expanded in both inpatient and outpatient settings throughout Lakeland.
Additions include identifying veteran patients through new veteran status questions asked during the admitting and registration process, implementing “Raising of the Flag,” which honors all veteran patients admitted to a hospital unit, and providing veteran patients with information regarding benefits and support available to them. Veteran support will continue to be available to participants of all Caring Circle programs including Transitions, Palliative Care, and Hospice at Home.
The integration also included specific training for inpatient and ambulatory care management teams to increase understanding of veteran culture, veteran specific needs in healthcare, and how to access resources and benefits. The education module Meeting the Healthcare Needs of America's Military Veterans will also be assigned to clinical team members in myLearning. This module will provide the initial background and training needed to help develop skills related to a culture of veteran centered care.
“Education and training of care providers on how to meet the unique needs of veteran patients is essential,” said Stephanie Kostizen, Veteran Support Services and We Honor Veterans program coordinator at Caring Circle. “Adding an educational piece for nurses, care managers, social workers, CNAs, therapists, and others will provide care teams with the tools they need to enhance care for veteran patients.”
