Microneedling is a collagen induction therapy for beautiful, youthful looking skin. The process creates thousands of micro-injuries in the skin to trigger the body’s natural wound healing process.
The body’s natural wound healing process consists of three phases, including:
Individuals who are looking to help reduce the look of acne scars, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles, large pores, brown spots, and pigment issues. Most anyone can undergo this procedure as long as they do not have any active infections or lesions in the treatment area or have any known wound healing issues.
At Stonegate Plastic Surgery, we use the SkinPen® to perform microneedling treatments. This new state-of-the-art microneedling device improves the appearance of acne and surgery scars as well as the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
The SkinPen® looks like a pen and consists of many fine needles that create thousands of precise micro-injuries into the dermis of the skin (middle layer of the skin). This allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair process triggering new collagen synthesis without scar formation.
Each treatment takes between 30 to 45 minutes with minimal to no downtime afterward, with most experiencing only a small amount of redness that goes away within 24 hours. Results of this treatment are long-lasting.
After treatment, your skin may appear slightly pink to red. Some patients also experience dryness, roughness, tightness, itchiness, and tenderness at the treatment sites. These conditions will resolve with time.
For best results, we recommend pairing SkinPen® with the Skin Infuse Kit which includes a sunscreen, collagen booster, a vitamin C serum, and a hydrating support product. All of these products have vitamins, peptides, and minerals that help to reduce the inflammation and help with skin remodeling and collagen synthesis, as well as managing the skin homeostasis and moisture.
The first step towards improving your skin with microneedling treatments is to schedule a consultation at Stonegate Plastic Surgery. During your consultation, we will discuss your medical history and your individual aesthetic goals. Our team will create a unique treatment plan to help ensure you meet your cosmetic desires.
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments will depend on the skin issues that you wish to treat. Treatment plans can be discussed during your consultation.
Are there any risks involved?
While the risks involved with receiving microneedling are lower than many other skin treatments, like any procedure, there are possible complications. These include bleeding, bruising, infection, scarring, and pigment problems.
How quickly are results visible?
Improvement in skin quality can usually be seen 6-8 days after the procedure, with continued results over time. A series of at least three microneedling sessions is usually recommended to achieve optimal results.
Will microneedling hurt?
No. Prior to your microneedling treatment, we apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment area to ensure you experience a comfortable treatment session. Most patients just report feeling light pressure during the treatment.
Does microneedling affect my Botox of fillers?
Microneedling should not be performed within two weeks of a Botox treatment to avoid affecting the Botox results. Be sure to disclose if you have recently had fillers or Botox to our team during your consultation appointment.
