Balanced Life Program

The Balanced Life Program was established to support the physical, psychological, professional, and social wellbeing of our residents.  The program coordinates social events as well as annual team-building retreat for residents.  Retreats in recent years have included high and low-rope courses, going to the beach, Wilderness Medicine, and riding roller coasters at Cedar Point.  Residents participate in individual wellness coaching sessions facilitated by, Dr. Grant Heller, a trained psychologist.

Social

Social Planning Committee
The committee consists of residents from each class year as well as 1-2 faculty members. The goal of the committee is to plan a social event each month for the residents to come together.

Professional

Resident to Resident Mentoring
The Resident Mentoring Program supports PGY3 mentors to assist PGY1’s in their personal and professional development. All residents have an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) based on the six core competencies and they select several areas of improvement that their mentor will help them focus on developing. The residents meet monthly alternating between protected didactic time to meeting outside of the program.

Resident to Faculty Mentoring
The Faculty Mentoring Program supports faculty mentors in the personal and professional development of PGY2 and PGY3 residents. These quarterly meetings focus on a resident’s Individualized Learning Plan (ILP), career goals, personal wellbeing, and more.

Coding Education
Residents receive extensive longitudinal education in documentation, billing, and coding throughout their training.

EPIC Efficiency Training
Residents attend a 4-hour training course to effectively navigate the EHR. Residents learn how to develop dot phrases, macros, and other tips and tricks to improve clinical efficiency.

Psychological

Wellness Coaching
This program allows residents to become familiar with the Center for Provider Wellbeing (CPWB), provide exposure to behavioral health support, and destigmatize behavioral health. Corewell Health Lakeland is aware of the stressors associated with residency and wants to provide residents the ability to learn resiliency skills to decrease stress and gain introspection. The CPWB provider will help residents continue to focus on their reason for choosing a career in medicine.

Recognitions
Recognitions are an important part of our wellbeing. We all want to be recognized for the jobs we do on a regular basis and not just when we go above and beyond. Our residents make significant impacts and impressions every day and when we hear positive comments from attendings, staff, and other residents we ensure that they are recognized in didactics and reward them with a gift card.

Physical

Food access in clinic
We want our residents to take care of themselves while they care for others, and we provide them with essential snacks and drinks that they can utilize if needed while seeing their patients.

YMCA family membership
We do not want a financial barrier to stand in the way of our residents living a healthy lifestyle and sharing that with their family. All of our residents are given a YCMA family membership.

Wellness Wednesdays in GME and FM
Residency is a busy time in our life, and it can be difficult to find the time to just manage personal things. Our residents have a protected afternoon on the 5th Wednesday of a given month that they can use to get an oil change, go to the, bank, or take care of anything they need.
