Tom Landis shared the following story:
“Circumstances, as the end of my father’s life became apparent, led him to the emergency room at Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph. Because going home to die was not an option given the layout of my parents’ modest apartment, we assumed he would stay on the fourth floor of the hospital. The “hospital” atmosphere, with its inherent endless activity and distractions, was definitely not what we had envisioned for our father.
“Knowing nothing about it other than it was a dedicated hospice center with a private room available, we jumped at the chance to move dad to the Hanson Hospice Center. What a blessing that turned out to be! In his last six days on this earth my father was treated with unbelievable respect, kindness, and loving care. From the director who checked him in, down to the aides tasked with the job of keeping him clean and comfortable, they were always extremely professional, but at the same time ultimately compassionate and genuinely empathetic.
“My father died with family at his side, on his own terms, pain free, in an atmosphere as close to home as one can imagine. Learning about the ‘stages of death,’ and the follow up materials provided regarding grief, mourning, and coping with the death of a loved one are just a few of the added benefits one can expect.
“I cannot say enough good things about the services Hospice at Home provides at a time most challenging for the terminally ill and their loved ones.”
